I have four absolute favorites:
1. Moonrise Kingdom
My favorite movie of this summer and of this year so far is Wes Anderson’s critically-acclaimed comedy. If you want to know why, read my post, Why To See Moonrise Kingdom.
2. Beasts of the Southern Wild
A unique and visually arresting adventure film about a little girl named Hushpuppy who lives with her father in “the Bathtub.” It’s an insanely moving picture and a true contender for awards later this year.
3. The Dark Knight Rises
I was eagerly anticipating this film around this time last year, so it’s fair to say that I had high expectations for Nolan’s final Batman movie. Nonetheless, Rises gave me exactly what I wanted to see. I felt that it was the best possible conclusion that could have been made- at least without Ledger’s unforgettable Joker.
4. The Amazing Spiderman
I was slightly hesitant to see this at first, but I ended up liking it better than every Marvel movie since Iron Man. Garfield is great in the role, the action is exciting, and the movie has humor and romance as well. For me, it easily topped The Avengers.
Now it’s your turn, what were your favorite films in theaters this summer?
Nice list. Moonrise Kingdom’s my favorite so far this year, with both Beats of the Southern Wild and The Dark Knight Rises just behind. I’m not sure what I’d say be my fourth favorite though, maybe The Amazing Spider-Man as well.
Thanks! It seems like those first three are, by popular consensus, “the best movies of the summer.” I have yet to find anybody that would disagree.
My top 3 mirror yours…I guess I would put Avengers instead of Spider-Man (I haven’t seen Spider-Man)
Thanks!
Beasts of A Southern Wild, Snow White and the Huntsman, ParaNorman, and Hope Springs were the best ones for me. This summer had slim pickings, didn’t it? Comic book movies had it’s spotlight this year 🙂
The pickings were slim. I also really liked ParaNorman, but didn’t see it until after I wrote this post. Otherwise, it would be on here.
